New Internet connection
Members may have noticed a marked improvement in the Wi-Fi speed in the clubroom. Others may have spotted a new aerial on the south-west corner of the clubhouse.
Up until this month we have relied on BT OpenWorld to provide our broadband They have no immediate plans to run fibreoptic cables to the club and so we have relied on the old copper cables from the cabinet. This has never been fast, but during the recent floods the service slowed to a crawl.
We have switched our internet service to StarLink. This is a low orbit satellite internet constellation comprising over 6,000satellites launched by Elon Musk's SpaceX operation.
Our previous broadband provided speeds of up to 20 Mbps, and struggled to run the cctv cameras and on-line meetings. StarLink is giving us speeds of up to 220 Mbps. One of your committee members was on a zoom call when we cut over and described it as if a rocket seemed to go off.
