Langstone Sailing Club operates as a Self-Help Club. It depends on its members to carry out nearly all the activities needed to keep it going. Unless members step forward to undertake work then the Club will be unable to function.Members are required to undertake a minimum of 3 duties each year, but the Club also relies on some members taking on specific roles.

The club is managed by a general committee headed by the Flag Officers. Six club members are elected annually to the committee by the members at the Autumn General Meeting. In addition, key roles including Club Secretary, Membership Secretary, Sailing Secretary etc. are appointed by the committee.

The club is looking for members to step forward and fill the following roles and positions

  • Rear Commodore Sailing. There will be a vacancy for a Rear Commodore (Sailing) to be elected at the Autumn General Meeting.
  • Club Secretary
  • Assistant Membership Secretary
  • Galley Team
  • IT Team
  • Estates Team
  • General Committee Members

Role description:

  • Rear Commodore (Sailing) oversees all the club activities on the water. Is assisted by the Sailing Secretary and chairs the Sailing Committee.
  • Club Secretary. The administration of the Club is carried out by the Club Secretary, assisted by the Office Manager and Minutes Secretary. The current Club Secretary (Larry Hopgood) is stepping down, and a replacement is needed. As Company Secretary the job entails maintaining company information in Companies House including the annual confirmation statement and preparing and managing the two annual general meetings
  • Assistant Membership Secretary The Membership secretary (Dick Taylor) maintains the membership records, which include members, their boats, and mooring allocations, which are held on an on-line system, Sailing Club Manager. He issues the annual renewal invoices to members. We are seeking an Assistant Membership Secretary to help Dick Taylor manage the membership database.

  • Galley Team We are setting up a Galley Team to assist the Galley Manager and take on responsibility for keeping the galley running and stocked. The team will oversee the operation of the galley, ensuring that it is always stocked, and clean. The galley is dependent on volunteers doing Galley Duties. If there are insufficient volunteers, then members will be rostered.

  • IT Team The club depends on IT to function.
  • There are a few members who keep all this running, but the club is looking for members to take on responsibility for the various parts of the IT system. This included, but is not limited to:

- Door entry fobs

- CCTV system

- Wi-Fi

- Club Data Store

- Club Local Area Network

- Telephones

- Bar and Galley card payment readers

- Email

- Video conference facilities

  • Estates Team. Many members are stepping forward to take responsibility to help maintain and improve our club. We have a few vacancies to fill including internal window cleaning, grass cutting, gardening, keeping front porch clean, Roster team for carpet cleaning, etc.

  • General Committee meets face to face at the Club, or remotely, on the second Monday evening of every month except August. Elected Members will have the opportunity to volunteer for tasks appropriate to their experience and interest and may be offered a specific role, which could potentially continue after they leave the committee.

  • Other opportunities There are numerous other opportunities to support the club ranging from small simple tasks to more complex tasks requiring special skills. If you can and wish to do more for the club just let the Commodore or Secretary know and they will help to identify appropriate tasks. Managing tasks for the club can be satisfying and enjoyable.

All management tasks undertaken by members will be recorded as one or more duties completed against their annual commitment.

Further information regarding vacancies can be found on the Club Website at https://langstonesc.org.uk/club/vacancy

The club is only able to function with the help of members. Club members are obliged to carry out a number of duties each year, and if insufficient members step forward to volunteer the club will have to revert to rostering.
