Dinghy News May - June

Published 22:57 on 17 Jun 2023

With the 2023 season well under way there have been loads of opportunities for getting out on the water - and many yet to come. Some of the recent highlights -

  • Pro-Am - Sun 4th June

The first Pro-Am race of the season took place in beautiful, breezy, conditions on Sunday 4th June. These muti-race days are a great opportunity to build your confidence on the water by sailing with a more experienced member. You can either use your own dinghy or book a club boat if you want to try something different. If you missed the first Pro-Am, there's another on Sunday 30th July. Don't miss out sign up via the website by a few days before the event to be sure that you don't miss out.

  • Orienteering - Sat 27th May

A fun event open to all where you collect points by visiting some of the nearby buoys and race marks, with a turnout from both the adult and junior fleets. Hope to run another later in the year - keep an eye on the website and forums !

  • JIB - Juniors in Boats - Sat 11th June

An opportunity for Juniors to get out and improve their skills through fun activities. This session was all about sailing in close proximity and an enclosed space - lots of tacking, gybing, shouting, laughing and bonding. Culminated with each boat trying to steal the plastic bottles attached to the other boats, without losing their own - organised mayhem !

  • Priory Potter ( Isle of Wight ) - Sun 11th June

An old LSC tradition that was run for the first time in over 10 years. Thank you to Mike Ford who gave us the opportunity to sail to the Isle of Wight in a group of 11 boats with safety cover and the bonus of a BBQ ( thanks Jason!) on the beach on arrival. The weather was very British - the only thing we didn't get was snow, but a great time was had by all with the satisfaction of having been on a real adventure.

  • Displacement Craft Familiarisation session - 13th June

Sinbad ( & Mylor) Driver Training took with with Dave Weinstock. Participants had existing power boat skills but were new to the club launches. More sessions can be arranged, particularly if you are interested in race officer or assistant role. Contact Dave Weinstock or Stewart Johnson

  • Regatta and Prentice Plate - Sat 17th June

Our main event on the racing calendar with participants from LSC, Locks and Emsworth Slipper sailing clubs. Very light winds in the first race made for difficult sailing but luckily the wind filled in for the second race. Finished off with a cream tea in the clubhouse and prize-giving by the Commodore. Well done to all participants and thanks to all the volunteers who made it happen!

There are plenty more dinghy racing and social sailing opportunities this summer, including a Wild Goose Chase on the 24th June and a social sail on Sunday 25th. Have a look at the website calendar and get out there to enjoy the beautiful harbours that we're so lucky to sit astride!
